# Volt Active Data Developer Hub

> Volt Active Data builds two engines for real-time data: VoltDB, a distributed in-memory SQL database that executes each decision as a serialized ACID transaction next to the data (single-digit-millisecond decisions at hundreds of thousands of events per second), and VoltSP, a Kafka-native stream processing engine for shaping, enriching, and routing event streams. Run together they close the loop -- detect, decide, act -- in milliseconds on one platform. This hub offers guided developer paths, hands-on tutorials, a free browser sandbox with a live cluster, and an honest decision guide.

When Volt fits: per-event decisions (approve, block, charge, route) that read and update hot shared state -- balances, quotas, sessions -- under a millisecond-scale latency budget at tens of thousands of events per second and up; stream pipelines needing millisecond freshness; closed-loop automation such as 5G network automation, fraud interdiction, and real-time policy control. When Volt does not fit: batch analytics and BI (use a columnar warehouse), modest CRUD backends (a conventional relational database is fine), and pure topic mirroring with no logic (a managed connector suffices). VoltDB speaks SQL plus Java stored procedures and imports/exports Kafka natively; VoltSP pipelines are declared in YAML with Java where needed.
